Ah... such a lovely view... You think so too, don't you?
―Stay Gold

Stay Gold (ステイゴールド, Sutei Goorudo) is a character in Umamusume: Pretty Derby.

Profile[]

Brimming with curiosity and the love to travel. She often plans reckless itineraries and sets off on carefree wanderings, sometimes staying away for long periods of time. Perhaps attracted by her carefree yet somewhat detached personality, she tends to be admired by the more eccentric Umamusume at the academy. According to them, she is “a mysterious person who you can't help but love.”

Appearance[]

Stay Gold is a petite girl with a height of 142cm with dark brown hair that fades to a deep ochre at the tips. This resembles how the real life horse's dark brown coat fades to a brighter ochre at the tip of his muzzle. She has a white strand of hair that resembles the star and disconnected stripe face marking of the actual horse. Stay gold has straight, nonchalant eyes and her iris transitions from a deep violet to gold, with white pupils. She wears an embellished golden ear cuff that is attached to a black and white feather with aquamarine beads on her left ear, and a simpler ear cuff on her right ear. This is a reference to Stay Gold's win in the 2001 G1 Hong Kong Vase where his jockey, Yutaka Take said that "it was as if wings had sprouted on his back".

Stay Gold's clothing appears to be that of an explorer, which may be a reference to the horse's Hong Kong name that directly translates to 'Golden Journey'. She wears a white dress shirt of uneven length underneath a harness that is crossed around her waist from which hangs a dagger and a cylindrical glass container. She wears black ripped dress pants that are tucked into knee-length laced black boots with a golden toe box. She also hangs a compass from her belt loop, and an oversized pair of goggles around her neck. Stay Gold wears a yellow-gold trench coat with gun flaps and a storm shield covering the chest area. The edges of the coat seems distressed with ragged, torn edges. This references the length of Stay Gold's racing career in real life where he ran a total of 50 races, which is considerably longer than the average racehorse. Long, black belts drape down the sides of the trench coat, resembling the black stripes of Stay Gold's racing silk. A royal blue piece of cloth is draped around her upper arms to resemble the blue stripe on the racing silk. She wears a black glove on her right hand and a fingerless version on her left hand. This resembles the white sock on the real horse's front left hoof.

Trivia[]

  • Some of the real life Stay Gold's offspring are also characters in Umamusume. They include Gold Ship, Orfevre, Dream Journey, Nakayama Festa and Fenomeno.
    • Stay Gold was indirectly referenced in Dream Journey's profile long before she became an umamusume. Due to said profile mentioning "anego", which Dream Journey refers Stay Gold as. And reference to journeys, which the umamusume Stay Gold was known to love.
  • Stay Gold's name is a reference to the song Stay Gold by Stevie Wonder.
  • Stay Gold's in game secret 1 states that she has a collection of bear themed souvenirs from all around the world. This is a reference to his main jockey, Shigefumi Kumazawa as kuma means bear in Japanese.

  • The 20 stars around Stay Gold in her SSR [Whimsical Wandering Star] represent the colours of the various Umamusume that raced alongside Stay Gold during his real life racing career. In the game, only Stay Gold and a few others are able to see the stars around her. The stars are referred to as "fragmented thoughts" that contain spiritual energy, likely a reference to the horses in real life. The stars vanish when Stay Gold interacts with the Umamusume that each star represents. This causes the Umamusume to feel the emotions of their real life counterpart when they raced with Stay Gold.
  • Stay Gold created a portal to the demon realm during her appearance in the manga Umamusume- Pretty Derby PisuPisu☆SupiSupi Golshi-Chan. However, it should be noted that this manga does not follow umamusume canon.
  • Stay Gold is so short that her feet do not touch the ground when she sits on a bench.
  • Before her official design was released, Stay Gold was represented by an NPC Umamusume named "Kin'iro Ryotei", which references Stay Gold's Hong Kong name, "黃金旅程", or Golden Journey (though if Kin'iro Ryotei was written in kanji, it would be “金色旅程” instead). She appeared in season one of the Umamusume Pretty Derby anime, representing Stay Gold in races that he ran in real life. Most notably, Kin'iro Ryotei raced in the Japan Cup with Special Week.
  • In her SSR [Whimsical Wandering Star] trainee story, Stay Gold mentions having travelled to South America.
  • Stay Gold refers to the Trainer as "Wandering Poet"[2]
